After thirty-seven years, Portland’s landmark restaurant Genoa will serve its last meal 22 November 2008. Once upon a time when Portland had little choice in fine dining, Genoa was THE place to dine; many of the people I know who grew up in Portland remember it being a destination spot for special dinners. Though still a popular destination for those seeking elaborate multi-course meals, myriad fine restaurants have sprouted like mushrooms in Portland’s food friendly climate over the last decade. Was Genoa slowly squeezed out? In a recent Oregonian article, Owner Kerry DeBuse blames the current economic climate for Genoa’s demise.
Perhaps now is the time to check Genoa out if you’ve never been, or to revisit an old haunt.
